The natural rubber applied to the casing means a more consistent feel and reaction to the tire structure itself, and delivers exceptional grip. Challenge uses non-vulcanized (heat and pressure process) natural rubber in the Open Tubulars so that the rubber itself is more supple. The tightly woven material helps with puncture protection and resiliency under stress. It is made from a blend of very fine cotton threads, which provides density and structure for the tire shape, but it also soft, flexible and supple under load or impact. The core of the Open Criterium is the 320 tpi CoreSpun casing. With the Open Criterium, Challenge builds the supple casing then adds a strong protection layer and a moderately firm, non-vulcanized rubber with an active tread pattern to better master the cornering stress and challenging road surfaces most criteriums inflict on riders. Open Tubular tires are more supple than standard clinchers, with a ride quality approaching classic tubular feel. If you choose to ride clinchers in this style of racing, you better trust them they way you can a tubular.Ĭhallenge's Open Tubular construction takes a similar handmade construction process from it's tubular design, and very high threads per inch count in the casing distinguish it from a standard clincher tire. Unless the weather changes, racers take crit riding to the limits every lap. In criteriums rider face the same course every lap, and that familiarity leads to high speeds, tight groups, and risk taking in corners. The Open Criterium is a fast rolling, sure footed clincher than was designed for the needs of the crit rider, which can be very one of the most tire crucial forms of road racing. Race-level clincher tires must be exceptional to meet the rigors and stress of competition.
